Tunbridge Wells West

Central Division

The western portal of Grove Tunnel viewed from the Montacute Road overbridge at the eastern end of the station. Note that the bracketed semaphore signals controlling entry to the station, worked from Tunbridge Wells West B Signal box, were in the course of being replaced by a new colour light signal with junction indicator and associated position light shunt signal. The signals at the tunnel entrance controlled movements along the single line towards Grove Junction, the lower of the two arms permitted a shunt movement to proceed as far as a shunting bell that was situated 5 yards beyond the eastern end of the tunnel. When the bell sounded the driver could safely propel back through the tunnel towards the station. © David Morgan

View looking west from the Montacute Road overbridge towards the station. Note the extensive berthing sidings, which were largely devoid of stock during the daytime on weekdays as trains were berthed in the London area between the morning and evening peaks. By this date track had already been lifted from the northern most siding, and exhibition stock forming “the Safety train” is stabled in the east facing bay. By this time only parts of the ground floor of the main station building were in use, as the staircase had allegedly been condemned. © David Morgan
