In the background of this view is Deal's signal box, also known as the ''glasshouse'' owning to its Southern Railway architecture. I have been made aware that the example here is a rarity, thus if in the area, well worth a visit. Behind the semaphore signal remains evidence of sidings, now long disused. © David Glasspool

Semaphore signals also remain in place just to the south of Deal station, as this view from 25th February 2006 shows. The locomotive is ''Battle of Britain'' Class No. 34067 ''Tangmere'' and it is hauling the ''Granville Express'' circular tour of Kent. © David Glasspool
