A westward view shows the signalling system in a transitional phase. Prominent on the left is the soon to be retired semaphore signal bracket, whilst visible in the background is its colour light replacement. The latter wears a white cross, indicating it is not yet in use. Motors from these dismantled semaphore signals were, apparently, used to keep other remaining semaphores operational. © David Glasspool

At the east of the ''up'' platform is the station's signal box, seen here on 31st July 2005. This was an early Southern Railway design, retaining timber above the side windows. It is essentially a scaled-down version of that at Ramsgate. © David Glasspool

A westward view from the crossing shows the chimney stacks to good effect, with both signal posts and the footbridge in view. The low-sided wall on the left is built in the distinctive yellow brick employed on many SER buildings in the company's early years. © David Glasspool

Britain's most impressive Indian restaurant? The station building's façade is an impressive spectacle, augmented by six towering chimneystacks. To the left can be seen the SER lattice footbridge and the twin semaphore ''up'' side semaphores. Re-signalling work began in December 2004. © David Glasspool
