Chatham Dockyard

October 2007

This photograph depicts the War Department shunter after safe arrival at Chatham. The locomotive

has been paired with one of the site's steam cranes, which has been tastefully repainted to look like

an armoured vehicle. At this time, the pair were awaiting being shunted to a permanent display position.

Also on view at the dockyard was a green 0-4-0 Diesel Mechanical Shunter. The locomotive was built

in 1956 by contractors F.C. Hibberd, and before arriving at Chatham, it was in preservation at the

Fawley Railway Museum, Henley-on-Thames. F.C. Hibberd was a contractor which specialised in

building diesel locomotives for industrial use, and the example pictured above was part of this

company's ''Planet'' range. Dave Humphries

Andrew Barclay 0-4-0 Diesel Shunter ''Thalia'' is observed at one of the slip shed's thresholds. This

particular locomotive has not come far: until 1988, it was in use at Rochester Goods Yard, moving

mineral freights between the site and an adjacent aggregate works. Dave Humphries
