Grain Refinery

The tanks in this picture are not part of the old refinery, they are the National Grid Isle of Grain Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) Terminal, where LNG that has been delivered by sea is stored prior to being vapourised for distribution via the high pressure gas pipeline system. This facility has been built on part of the old refinery that dealt with liquified petroleum gas (LPG). It was served by its own sidings which branched off to the left of the main line between the Grain Flood Gates (which cross the line) and Grain Level Crossing. This shows the last remnants of the old BP refinery and shows where the railcar loading racks were situated. The storage tanks are primarily used by Air BP for the storage of Aviation Spirit, which arrives by sea and is then distributed by pipeline. Prior to the pipeline construction this traffic used to be transported by up to three trains per day to Salfords (for Gatwick) and in much lesser quantities to Stansted.
