A view down the western flank of the station, alongside "Midland Road", shows building work in progress beside the trainshed wall. Here, a brand new building, constructed to the same red brick style as the station, was being created. This was to house an electrical substation and boiler, and also become home to the station operations department. . © David Glasspool

Every wall is decorated with arches, those on the southern and western elevations also incorporating windows, these backing onto rooms. HST power car No. 43085 is at the buffer stops, wearing the much more pleasing revised Midland Mainline scheme. On the concourse can be seen the LCD departure boards and a hotchpotch of retail units. © David Glasspool

The new platforms are seen on 12th May 2004, number 8 still not quite ready. Again, the design employed here is a stark contrast to the Barlow trainshed, it instead being reminiscent of the present Euston station. During the design stage, it had been decided that there was little point in trying to replicate Barlow's trainshed to any degree, thus a wholly contrasting design was instead pursued. © David Glasspool
