Dartford

Bulleid-designed 4 EPB No. 5196 is seen at Dartford Junction, nearing the end of its journey as it leads the ''71'' Cannon Street to Dartford service, via Bexleyheath. The rear of the ''Brett'' Hopper freight depicted on the previous page is seen rounding the curve for the original North Kent Line via Woolwich. The Dartford Loop Line via Sidcup can be seen diverging to the left, with the rotary converter substation of 1926 in the centre. The small triangular section of land within the fork of the junction was once occupied by Dartford Junction signal box. © Chris

We are ⅔-mile east of Dartford station, at the former site of Littlebrook Junction. A Class 73 Electro-Diesel is seen negotiating the sweeping curves as it prepares to head underneath the Dartford Tunnel approaches. The grassed area left of the running lines was formerly occupied by sidings used by power station traffic. © Chris

In the background of this view can be seen the ''62'' service from Gillingham to Charing Cross, formed of a 4-CAP and 4 EPB, riding over the same section of track as that of the Class 73 in the previous view. In the foreground can be seen the road widening works, forming part of the M25 construction programme. This saw the Dartford Tunnel approach road doubled in capacity. The section of road seen here under construction opened in 1986. © Chris
