Hastings

Wayne Walsh has kindly submitted the following collection of photographs, providing an internal look at the surviving SR signal box at Hastings, a view not normally seen by most station visitors. The cabin continues to control semaphore signals located at the station's eastern end, but colour lights prevail to the west.

Over the past decade, numerous signal boxes have assumed BR (S) Green lining and name boards, including those

at Margate, Ramsgate and, as seen above, Hastings. The signal box, of 1931 vintage, was built to a standard SR

design, which had earlier been used at the new-build Ramsgate station in 1926. © Wayne Walsh

Today, the frame here comprises 84 levers, 34 of which are ''spare'' and indicated by their white colour. The

red levers control stop signals and ground signals, the black levers operate points, and the blue levers control

facing point locks. © Wayne Walsh

The scope of Hastings signal box extends to Bopeep Tunnel (inclusive) in the west, after which the cabin at

Bopeep Junction takes over. To the east, the signal box controls the layout at Ore, after which the tokenless

block section on the single-track to Rye begins. The signalling code for Hastings is ''EDL''. © Wayne Walsh
