North Downs Steam Railway
Gala Weekend July 1990
A fete and traction display weekend at the North Downs Steam Railway saw saddle tank
''Topham'' hard at work, sporting its very smart red-lined livery. This was the locomotive's
last year of operation before it had to be withdrawn for overhaul. From 1992 onwards, tank
engine ''North Downs'' did the honours until the railway's transfer to Tunbridge Wells in 1996.

The gala ensured good loadings on the weekend's trains. I mostly remember the trains being just
one carriage long plus the generator van, which could very well be the case here, despite the special
event day. Mike Glasspool
An interesting line-up of vintage road vehicles at the event certainly complemented the railway
traction and rolling stock. A marquee tent is seen on the far left and beyond it, the four posts of
Dartford Bridge, which was still in the thick of construction, not to open until October 1991.
