No. 1607 Does the Splits: August 1989

By John Horton

4 CEP unit No. 1607 decided to do the splits one afternoon, as it shunted off "19 slip" and into carriage sidings 3 & 4. The first coach and leading bogie of the second vehicle passed easily, but the points sprang under the train, and the rear bogie of the second vehicle decided to head for carriage sidings 7 & 8. The ‘’juice’’ rail blew out all power, and after localising it, the re-railing took a little under 12 hours to complete with the Ashford Breakdown Train.

A bent conductor rail and a train straddling three tracks: this is 4 CEP No. 1607 after the points sprang back whilst the unit was passing over them, on the approach to the carriage sidings. In the background, on the right, can be seen those sidings added at the time of the Kent Coast Electrification, on the site of the track bed to Ramsgate Town station. © John Horton

Parked in road 4 of the carriage shed is the breakdown train from Ashford, which is in the process of hoisting up the near side of the trailer vehicle. © John Horton
