Margate West

A model railway or the real thing? This superb bird's eye view of Margate was captured by John Horton. On the left is the housing estate which was built upon the former site of the carriage sidings and turntable. On the far right can be seen the entire canopy of the former parcel dock platform, long disused but structurally complete. At the foot of the photograph can be seen the former stables and, alongside, the renowned water tower. This view shows to good effect the sweeping nature of the tracks here, an effect we find difficult to replicate on our model railway layouts when space is limited! © John Horton

The 10:53 service to St Pancras, routed via Ramsgate, Canterbury West, and Ashford, is seen departing platform 4. Note that the Class 395 unit has the aerodynamic cowling retracted at the front, exposing the coupling. © John Horton

John has kindly edited the above view of the former SR goods yard to illustrate where tracks once laid. Just left of centre is the substantial SR goods shed, as seen on the previous page. As can be seen, the land immediately south of the shed building has been given over to housing, but sections of track bed still remain beyond. © John Horton
