Margate West

Spacious subways were provided by the SR at both the rebuilt Margate and new-build Ramsgate stations, reminiscent of the earlier 1894 LC&DR passage at Faversham. Wide staircases linked platforms with the subway. Recent restoration work certainly provides a favourable contrast to the dark, narrow ex-SER subways witnessed along the North Kent lines. Passengers at these Thanet stations also had the luxury of platform lifts. © David Glasspool

Arguably the most striking feature of the station is the huge semi-circular-shaped booking hall. An even larger example was erected at Ramsgate, and the SR followed a similar course of action at the later Hastings station rebuild. © David Glasspool

This view of the lesser-seen western elevation of the main building shows a large gap in the structure's end wall, which was formerly used as part of the parcels depot. © David Glasspool
