Strood

On 18th January 2013, Network Rail submitted a planning application to Medway Council for construction of a footbridge at Strood. Naturally, this was in connection with the ''Access for All'' programme of the former, which aims to provide step-free entry to platforms at numerous stations nationwide. Construction started in early 2014 at the Maidstone ends of the platforms, the basic framework having been completed by May of that year. In addition to the footbridge works, the platforms here were due to be lengthened at their Gravesend ends to accommodate twelve-vehicle trains, and materials for this project arrived on site in the first week of July.

Unlike those similarly-design footbridges emerging at other North Kent stations, no provision has been made in either tower for staircases leading down to the platforms. We fast-forward to August, where we see a virtually complete, but not yet open, footbridge. The cladding style of the towers and the paint scheme of the main span are in harmony with the footbridge at Greenhithe, which was completed in 2008. An ''emergency'' staircase can be seen running up the side of the left tower. © Mike Glasspool
