Yeovil Junction
HST Wanderings
During November 2008, the Great Western Main Line between Taunton and Exeter St David's was closed at weekends as a result of engineering work. This provided the interesting spectacle of Paddington to Exeter services being routed via Yeovil Pen Mill and Junction stations. Beyond Yeovil Junction, the HSTs fulfilled the service for local stations on to Exeter Central, for the Paddington trains were using the paths normally allocated to units from Waterloo.

Another front view of the semaphore signal gantry is this time afforded from the single-track spur itself. To the right is the LSWR signal box, whilst behind this are a rake of redundant BR Mk 2 air-conditioned carriages upon the former Clifton Maybank spur. © David Glasspool

Shortly after passing under the gantry, our HST grinds to a halt, to make way for Class 159 unit Nos. 159007 and 159008 from Waterloo. These would be terminating at Yeovil Junction and the onward service provided by the HST. © David Glasspool
